Karpathy: the vibe coding era is over, agentic engineering is next

At AI Ascent 2026, Karpathy said agents now write code faster than humans can read it, and called agentic engineering the next discipline for software teams.

Andrej Karpathy (AI researcher, OpenAI co-founder, former Tesla AI director) spoke at AI Ascent 2026, Sequoia Capital's annual conference.

What Karpathy said

A year after he popularized "vibe coding" — writing code with AI without diving into implementation details — he says he's never felt more behind: agents now write code faster than a developer can read it.

The next discipline is agentic engineering: an engineering practice where the whole job is steering agents and maintaining output quality, not writing code yourself.

Why it matters

Vibe coding assumed you still read the code — you just wrote less of it. Agentic engineering is the next step: agents work at a volume and pace where line-by-line review is physically impossible. The developer's role shifts from writing to directing.
