Andrej Karpathy (OpenAI co-founder, ex-Tesla) once wrote that if you drop out of the development context for even 30 days, you're hopelessly behind. And now that moment has come even for him.
Karpathy posted a confessional tweet that quickly went viral. He writes that he's never felt this far "behind." The programming profession, in his words, is "dramatically refactoring," with fewer and fewer lines of human-written code.
The Main Pain — Missed Leverage
Karpathy feels he could be 10x more effective if he'd just properly connected all the tools that shipped in the past year. The fact that he isn't using that boost feels like a skills gap.
A New Layer of Abstraction
Above regular code, a new layer has appeared that needs to be mastered: agents, sub-agents, prompts, contexts, memory, permissions, MCP, LSP, integrations... And the hardest part is building a mental model for these "probabilistic, buggy, and constantly changing entities."
