OpenAI doubling staff to 8,000

Hiring focus: developers and sales. Per Ramp data, new clients choose Anthropic 3x more often.

OpenAI plans to double its headcount from 4,500 to 8,000 by year-end and is taking a massive new office in San Francisco — 100,000 square feet.

However, the main hiring focus is developers and technical sales staff for enterprise sales. OpenAI is starting to lose the B2B market. According to the Ramp AI Index 2026 (a good report by the way, worth reading), new enterprise clients currently choose Anthropic three times more often than OpenAI. Over the past year, Anthropic's share of B2B AI spending grew from ~2% to 25% — and the growth continues to accelerate. In absolute terms, OpenAI is still the leader, but now they need to urgently hire 3,500 people to try to win enterprise back.

At least someone's hiring rather than laying off.
