According to the company, its new internal model has solved more than a hundred long-unsolved problems across various fields of mathematics, in addition to the previously announced result on the Navier–Stokes equation. OpenAI will now work with an independent group of mathematicians who will help assess the significance of the results and prepare them for publication.
The initiative follows criticism from prominent mathematicians of the race among AI companies to solve well-known problems just to flex their models' muscles. Scientists argue that this race leaves too little time for verifying proofs, explaining new methods, and crediting the work of prior researchers.
The group consists of nine mathematicians. They will publish recommendations and will be available to advise other AI companies as well. The group doesn't control OpenAI's decisions or bear responsibility for the pace of its model development. OpenAI won't be paying them.
